TALBOT6229

Lacock Abey
Sunday 13th.

13 May 1849 [in another hand]

My dear Henry

Here is a letter that will make you perfectly happy, I hope, about our Sisters at Rome. You will see that no letter has been either lost or delayed, but that they did not even think of writing. – I hope nothing will occur in the mean time to make their departure more difficult than they anticipate – At any rate they must have both money & horses as they do not specify the contrary fact – They seem as much at a loss as we are to assign a cause for the attack of the French – I send you also a note of Lady Lansdowne to whom I wrote on Friday – to ask if she had heard anything. You might have had your mind set at ease yesterday if you had thought of applying to her – but perhaps the Trahernes were also au courant de tout cale & in communication with you –

I congratulate you very much on your satisfactory arrangement with the American gentleman, & I hope it will in some degree make amends for former disappointments – Mlle. A is curious to know his name, as she has several American acquaintance & she thinks he may possibly be a friend of hers – She desires me to thank you very much for both your letters – as do I, for those you wrote me, but I could not answer the first, for fear of disappointing your probable expectation that a letter from Caroline or Horatia might be in the same envelope.

Thanks also for the Chronicle: that letter is very interesting – Our invalids have not left their bed yet but they are no worse, & Mr Kenrick continues to attend them.

Your affectionate
Constance –

I think you once told me we could have books to read from the Library in St. James’s Sqr. Can you get the Pickwick papers & Dombey and Son! – to bring down with you, when you come –

Lady Lansdowne to Constance Talbot

My dear Constance

Nothing has been heard of Caroline since the 12th. April – & Charry Traherne tells me their last letter was the 18th. they were then packing up – & meant to set out early in May – I trust they will be personally safe but it is very disagreeable & the more so because it might have been so easily avoided, as the “coming events” sent long shadows & they could have moved to Naples if the weather was too cold to come north, which I dare say has been their reason –

I have had more rheumatism the last month than all the winter –

I wish you had told me how you are getting on & if you are really going to h..re[?] Lacock

Yours very affly
LL

I will let you know if I hear from Rome & shall be obliged if you will do the same

Ly. Brownlow has just written me word that she has heard from Ld. Mt. E. the 27th all well, no danger to them & meaning to start by sea on the 12th she has also a few lines from Car of the 20th the attack of the French had made no difference to their plans
