My dear Henry,
I have two letters to thank you for – one which lay at the Post office all Sunday, & which by its free consent to our travelling scheme, anticipated your answers to my last, which I received this morning – Thanks! many times – you have consented so graciously without even calling in question our good taste in preferring horses to Steam. – I will take care to have a paper signed by Mr. Brown – it had better be a receipt – for I propose to pay the money to himself – Would there be any risk in this! Perhaps there would & you would rather chuse that I should pay the Coachman at the journey’s end. Tell me which I ought to do – Mr. Brown has promised to borrow a road book; – but if he fails I will apply to you for further information – I quite agree in your recommendation of deviating from the dull direct road after Harrington – and we will take the one which you propose – It passes through a country which I have long wished to see and where the girls will find many subjects for sketching. If I succeed in getting a Road Book, I will take it with us & return it by Mr. Brown’s man – We are beginning to put our horses in training, by making them work a little every day till Wednesday the 22d. Thanks for letting us stay another week –
Caroline’s letter is very interesting – I am glad they are gone home and Lord Mr. E. better – but those headaches are wretched things. I have heard since that Caroline has asked my Brother to take charge of some parcel which she wants to send to Lausanne – for Annie – He is going soon to visit Madame de Polien – How very unfortunate is the birth of twins with their poverty! The Country here is quite in perfection with the Autumnal tints – We have alternate days of storms & fine weather – the latter seem to be getting the upper hand gradually – I hope much for next week –
The Girls are out with Mlle. A – or they would send loves & a heap of thanks for your consent to our scheme –
Your affectionate
Constance
