TALBOT649

Harrow, 1
June 17th 1815.

My dear Mamma,

I thank you for the parcel which I received quite safe. - It would however have been better to have sent it by the Coach. - The books are very nicely bound, but in 3 vols. instead of two, as I desired. The old Man, who brought my note to you, is called Winter. a Happy name, for he looks just like old Father Christmas. - He is a great cheat: - so I am very glad, you did not pay him at Sackville St 2 as will be seen in the sequel. He charges five shillings to walk to Town: & seven, if at Night Time. - What however kept him in Town last night, I cannot conceive, for he left Harrow at one o'clock. -- well - I intended to pay him, my share: 1s 8d Mr Trevor, & Ld Garlies 3 paying the rest ... But the cunning old man, went to Ld Dungannon's 4 House, & there got all the seven shillings - & then proceeded to Ld Galloway's - & there got seven shillings more. & returning here, expected the same from me. I mentioned the imposition to Dr Butler. 5 & he would not allow me to give the old man anything; but bade me divide, the four shillings (which I shd have given him, on account of the parcel he carried) between Trevor & Garlies, who were had been cheated. - I have made no use of your permission to dine with Lady Charlemont 6 as I dined with Ld Northwick 7 yesterday, & what is not surprizing, had a headach today. - Tell her, if you seen see her, that I was not well enough, or she may think it rude of me not to go. - To cure myself of my headach, I walked to Preston & Wembly which is six miles & a half, in an hour, & forty minutes through the Sun. -- was not that quick? - It had, wonderful to say, the effect of taking away my headach entirely, which you would perhaps have supposed, it would have increased. You must not tell Lady Charlemont, that I was at Preston, while she was at Dinner.

I remain, Yrs Afftly
