May 13th
My dear Henry
I am thankful to hear that you passed unharmed through your perilous journey on Tuesday – – alarmed, you must have felt, although you do not say so – for we all know that many of the worst railway accidents have been solely caused by delays. – and consequent collisions with other trains. I am not surprised that you should have been so struck with the beauty of the budding verdure – and after the present rain, it will be even more perfect – Then, I promise you, we shall require no entreaty to walk or drive abroad to admire & enjoy – but today is very damp – there has been a drizzling rain all the morning – yesterday our weather was much the same as yours – I am glad we didn’t happen to be at Bath this week; which would probably have been the case without Caroline’s visit. –
On the back of the two portraits you left with me to shew Mlle Amélina, was written on the one ‘Nurse’ – on the other ‘Mania, with ideas of wealth’. – Did you observe this? – It accounts for the elder woman looking dismal, but not deranged. – I have put down two commissions on the enclosed paper for Goodwin – Will you have the kindness to order him to execute them. –
Mr Gale has not performed his promise about giving in the Estimates today. –
your affectionate
Constance
Remember Harriots direction is 15 St James’s Place – if you have time for a visit –
