TALBOT6671

Markeaton Sunday Aug. 15.

My dear Henry

I received your letter enclosing specimens of Trees from the Andes – Uncle William said the same had been sent to him: and my Brother looked at them, but expressed no desire to introduce them in his shrubbery – I don’t think he is curious in Trees, for ornament, although he well understands the management of his plantation – both as timber, and as forming covers for his game – He is unfortunately lame, having sprained his foot a few days before I came. He will not consent to lay it up & therefore he gets no better: and he fancies that by moving along very slowly he does himself not aggravate the evil – he was more than ½ an hour walking from Church, which is only a mile off. – I walked there this morning with Ela & Charles, Mr Strangways & my Brother – Harriot & Mr & Mrs Traherne went in the Poney carriage after luncheon – Trahernes leave tomorrow for their visits in the North – & the meeting at Newcastle: Mr Strangways is laying out a tour in Derbyshire, for seeing Haddon Hardwick etc – but I don’t know when he goes – Afterwards, there will be nobody staying in the house, unless Ld Lansdowne comes – I believe he has is expected at Mr Strutt’s, and Harriot thinks he will probably come here also – She, (Harriot) says, if I will promise to stay on rather beyond the fortnight she will invite some-body to make it more gay for Ela: so I am to give her a kind of idea tomorrow, about it.

I could not arrange for Charles to have a writing master, because there is nobody recommendable that they know of – I don’t think it is of much consequence, for he is very happy & not at all troublesome – I will look for some books tomorrow among Noel’s collection s. – and insist on his reading steadily for an hour or two. I believe Mr Williams wished him to read some history. There is no post either coming or going to day: so I shall keep my letter open in case of wishing to add anything tomorrow. –

Your affectionate

Constance

I wish you would introduce Golden Junis, and golden yews &c. at Lacock, to enliven and supersede some of our dark yews –
