TALBOT6673

Markeaton Aug 21. Saturday.

My dear Henry

You have worse weather a great deal than we have here – Thursday we had no rain at all – only a threatening sky, which indeed is mostly the case, with much thunder in the air; – and a blue haze which looks like November. – I wrote to Mlle Amélina yesterday & said I wished Goodwin to come for me on Wednesday – and that I would return on Friday – Harriot has no superstitions about that day – which is lucky as it seems to suit best – Our host & hostess consider that we might feel too tired on Thursday, after the Play – and I believe they are right – Uncle William left us yesterday – he had paid a comfortable long visit, such as you are generally guiltless of. – I suppose you never remained anywhere so long as you once did in this house in old times.

Many things are greatly altered & improved since my time, and some look just the same – The trees & pleasure ground are less altered than the house & garden – Ela and Charles have won the affections of their Uncle & Aunt by their gentleness and happy enjoyment of everything that falls in their Way – I am sorry to say my Brother’s lameness continues as bad as ever – and he is the more vexed about it, as the 1st of September approaches – when Noel is expected home for a fortnight’s shooting – On the 13th they intend going to <Sartgitend?> & Noel will return to his Tutor.

Please to tell Mlle Amélina that I have nearly secured a remplaçanta for <Concorsan?>. She will understand my meaning.

Love to all; your affectionate

Constance
