Greta Bank

Friday 28.

My dear Henry

One line to meet you on your return to London, to say that whenever you may chance to arrive at Greta Bank, you will find us neither giving parties, nor receiving visitors; for Mr Joshua Stanger’s death has thrown the whole neighbourhood into mourning – and they decline entering into society at present. – Our party is therefore manqué. We have just seen the funeral procession pass along the road. –

I will not send Goodwin until you send me further orders – I received your second letter from Paris yesterday, & am glad you are better. –

I hope Charles will have a pleasant journey with M. Ménard & arrive here safely on Tuesday.

Your affte Constance
