TALBOT6973

My dear Henry

Who was the friend who carried you off today at Paddington, – He reminded me a little of Mr Calvert Jones.– 1 When he took possession of you, Ela 2 & I retired into the Ladies waiting room and eat our luncheon, for we were very hungry, having breakfasted soon after six. We kept watching the door, expecting every minute to see you appear – but at last Ela said she thought she saw you driving away in a cab and looking towards the Station. We ended our journey as prosperously as we began it, and had little rain till even Swindon. Afterwards it was chilly and unpleasant, but we found good fires here in our rooms & in the Library, and we are quite comfortable. We saw large patches of bright red flowers like clover or vetch on the railway banks, near Pangbourne; and were all the way from thence to Chippenham – Pray observe it, for we could make out what it was – Marian asked me if you could give them the names of the best maker of portable pocket telescopes in London. Mr Gilder wishes to buy one.3 I said I would ask you –

I only write this hurried scrap to tell you of our arrival

Your affectionate
Constance –

Lacock Abbey
