Greta Bank
Monday June 26.
My dear Henry
I have received your 2 letters, one on Saturday evening, by the day mail – the other this morning. – I hope you are on the whole content that the pleading of your case is put off till November – as by this means you will get out of town at once – There have been 2 or 3 very close oppressive days with a leaden kind of atmosphere, that you will have found very overcoming in London – and I am quite anxious that you should get back to Greta Bank & enjoy the few short months that remain of our term. – We are quite willing to search for the various plants you mention in their several localities – and even without such a special inducement, are desirous of revisiting Troutbeck, Coniston &c – but the weather is not quite settled at present – and there is too much blue haze overhanging the scenery if even when if does not rain – Perhaps if you make haste, you will be in time to join us in these expeditions. There is an influx of visitors since our first pleasant little tournée, which I fear we shall henceforth find annoying – but that is the unavoidable penalty we pay for living in this beautiful country: and excepting by filling the hotels, it is of little consequence. – We had a pleasant walk on Saturday evening through the wood, to the place where various roads meet above the valley between Skiddaw & Blencathra – I had never been near so far before – it is the prettiest walk, I think, on our side the vale of Keswick – and had our strength permitted, we should have strolled on yet further.
You were hurried in writing & did not allude to Mlle Amélina’s commission – which however she hopes you will not have forgotten – In money transactions we know you are particular – and these £12– for a needy relative, Mlle Amélina felt anxious to get forwarded to Paris with as little delay as possible.
We had some showers this morning which have somewhat cleared the air. – But it is still very hot.
Your affectionate
Constance.
All at Greta Bank are quite well – with the exception of Mlle A. who though better, has not quite lost her cold – Rosamond had a very nice letter from Charles on Friday –
