My Dear Constance
The intolerable heat of the weather has made me rather unwell, owing to eating ices, which by medical men we are recommended not to do, but one sees hundreds of people doing so – I am therefore remaining quietly in my hotel instead of paying any visits or doing any business, and this delay may make me late for the commencement of Charles’s holidays. Therefore I think it best to alter the directions I sent from Lyons (which letter I hope you received)
I think Goodwin had better come up to Town on the < 28th?> 29th & enquire for me at Cox’s hotel. If I am not arrived let him go and sleep at Basingstoke on the 30th, and meet Mr Williams & Charles at that station on the morning of the 31st and bring him to Greta the nearest way
Good bye
Your affte
Henry
