London Wedny Sept. 19th
My dear Constance
Charles was enchanted with the ruins of St Mary’s Abbey at York which we saw early this morning.
The weather was magnificent and the ruins are scarcely excelled by anything in England both from their intrinsic beauty and the charm of their Situation – Afterwards we went to see the Minster which also caused great admiration – It looked to perfection this morning. Passing along the street Charles discovered & recognized Capt Wake’s House, from having seen my photograph of it which he remembered well – Yesterday our journey was from Edinburgh to York where we arrived at ½ past 9 at night, & lodged ourselves comfortably at the Black Swan –
This afternoon we passed thro’ Peterboro’, near enough to have a good view of its Cathedral. I felt quite well today, only a little fatigued with so long & rapid a journey Charles went down to Harrow by a train at ½ past 5 oclock in ye afternoon. It was crowded with Harrow boys –
adieu
Your affte
Henry
