My dear Henry

Mr Sandford did not commission Mr Paterson to let his house to you, but only employed him for the Inventories. – Therefore he never thought of applying through him for the Rent. However it is all cleared up by your letters; & on application to Paterson today Mr Sandford has received the £100 – and acknowledged it by a note to me just received – Which I will lock up for security. It is useless now to speak further on the subject, as it is all set to rights – but Mr Sandford expressed his regret yesterday – that you should have mistaken his intentions by communicating with him through Mr Paterson – He might have guarded against the probability of your doing so by expressing being more explicit on this point. –

Thanks for your remittance to me of £120 –

Rosamond is gone today to a morning performance of this wonderful conjuror Wiljalba Frikell. – with Mlle A. Matilda, & Sarah Spedding–<1> I hope She will enjoy it; for it is certainly very amusing – and she can scarcely feel chilled in her bonnet & Morning dress. – besides the weather today is very mild – I am sorry to say that though her neck is less stiff and the general swelling is diminished, there is a troublesome little gland close under the ear which gives her pain when touched, and keeps up irritation – The original one Cannot heal while this disposition lasts. Dr Moir 1 continues to see her almost daily – so that we take every possible care of her – but I cannot foresee when the termination of all this discomfort will be brought about. I am sure we must take her into some very healthy air as soon as she is fit for it – and this will be when we leave Edinburgh – as I do not see anything that can be done sooner – nor would she at the present time be fit to leave the Doctor’s hands, were we otherwise free. – A most kind offer of Miss Jane Spedding’s<3> to lend us Greta Bank until their return from London, comes I think most opportunely under these circumstances – for though I know you would not like our delaying to return home, if the scheme were simply one of pleasure, it is a very different thing when considered as an almost certain means of restoring health. – I have written to Miss Jane Spedding to say I would acquaint you with her very kind offer and that I hoped you might be prevailed on to accept it on Rosamonds account – That we ladies would like it very much &c &c She and Mr John Spedding2 had the very kind forethought to put everything in order at Greta Bank, before they left it for Scarboro; with a view to our going there if we liked it, on our way south – and they wished Sarah Spedding to tell us this; but not to press for an answer until we it suited us to arrange our future plans – Could anything be more kind? –

We remembered to drink your health yesterday with all honor & affection & wished we had been together. –
