[fragment]
Lacock A April 16. 1858.
The Great Shrewsbury case is put off till next Tuesday the 20th which gives time for further researches – Accordingly I have just received a note from Mr Awdry saying that he and the Duke of Norfolk’s Solicitor are coming here tomorrow morning to make a grand hunt among the old parchments, the Solicitor being persuaded that with his acuteness he shall be able to detect some important writings that have escaped our less practised eyes. He is engaged in a vain attempt to deny the authenticity of the monument in Kinver Church Staffordshire raised by Wm Talbot Bishop of Durham to the memory of his father William, son of Sharington Talbot of Lacock – I have found deeds signed by Wm Talbot the Elder (who by the way wrote an excellent hand) & mentioning his son William but the Solicitor won’t believe it unless he sees it with his own eyes. His theory is that Wm had no son and that the Bishop pretended! to be his son – as if orthodox prelates ever did that kind of thing! but I hope we may meet with the deed again tomorrow and then he will be convinced.
