Lacock Saturday 17th April
My dear Constance
The D. of Norfolks solicitor has been here all day from ½ p. 9 in the morning till ¼ p. 8 in the evening looking over parchments with Mr Awdry – & he is not yet satisfied that he has seen all there is to see, so if the H. of Lords adjourn the case after the next hearing, he will come again –
We have come across a curious matter about Sir John Talbot when a fiery young man in 1655 caning the High Sheriff of Staffordshire in the market place of Lichfield for which offence he was fined a thousand marks by the Court of Queens Bench – But he appealed to the clemency of Cromwell & obtained his pardon which bears the great seal of the Common wealth in fine preservation. with the legend round the seal “In the Third Year of Liberty restored” –
I suppose you are making preparations for leaving Edinburgh – Mr Awdry has remitted £150 to your account at the Bank of Scotland of which I suppose they will give you Notice when they receive it –
Your affte
Henry
I go to London on Monday and return Friday
