My dear Henry
I am very sorry that none of us wrote to you sooner, as you had been expecting a letter. Ela ought certainly to have answered your’s and to have thanked you for writing so quickly to tell us of your safe arrival – Charles was equally exact in fulfilling his promise of writing at his journey’s end – and we got his letter (of a very few lines) a day earlier (of course) than your’s – In a second letter he gave us a more detailed account of the journey, and expressed himself much pleased with your having met Dr Vaughan. It seems that the changes in the work of the lower sixth & upper fifth have added much to his comfort – You will have received my business letter before now. – but I was obliged to delay it until I had a sufficiently quiet day to make my calculation – It was very good of you to send the remittance of £100 without waiting to hear from me – It will no doubt be received in a few days by the Bank of Scotland, when I suppose they will give me notice of the sum – I have heard nothing of Mr Orange – nor has any letter come for you – Sarah Spedding has come to her Uncle & Aunt in George’s Square, under the escort of Mr Headlam – and Mr Carlisle Wake (Who was on a visit to the Speddings) came to us this week – and I think he seems very happy between the two houses – Tomorrow he goes to Stirling, and after finishing his visit to the Speddings between the middle & end of next week, will return home to Ormathwaite, to see the last of his Sister – She has lived with them altogether for the last 2 years – while her husband Major Seton finished his time in Canada. We had very rough weather yesterday – but today is greatly improved again – Matilda has had 2 Balls this week; and this Evening I am going to take Ela & her to Mrs McNeells’ Music party. Tomorrow there is a Concert of Sacred music in the morning to which I hope Rosamond will feel able to go – She will be able to get away if the fatigue proves too much for her. She has only left the house once to walk up & down the Crescent in the sun – but even this is making progress. The rest of us are well –
Your affte
Constance
Will you please to let Wilkins have the enclosed order about sending us a hamper of onions & winter vegetables –
