My dear Henry

Mrs Matthews sent me yesterday, by my desire, a list of governors & Patrons of the Clergy Orphan Institution for which her boy is a Candidate. I find among the names several whom I can ask and I see that your Friend Dr Whewell of Trinity College, Cambridge, has 5 votes. I hope you will not mind of the trouble of writing a few lines to ask him to vote for little Edward Matthews, at the ensuing Election in November. The case is an urgent one, because he is already 11 years of age – and at twelve will be past the age prescribed by the rules of the Institution for admission – At 15, they are dismissed from the Institution, to enter into some apprenticeship or profession – If Dr Whewell has not already promised his votes, I have no doubt he will favorably receive the application – I send you one of the circulars to enclose to him –

I was very glad to receive your letter written on the Tuesday that Charles joined you at Lacock. I think that if he precedes you in the journey to Grasmere, you had better entrust to him the registered letter you speak of as containing Mary Talbot’s cadeau to Matilda – Charles will perhaps have an opportunity of giving it to her in person – and if not, we can devise some other way of getting it to her – Will you tell him that Rosamond has got his letter – Her cold is much better, & the swelling in her face nearly gone down –

I hope you have pleasant fresh weather now – Here it is no longer the least too hot –

Love to Charles, & I remain your affectionate
Constance.

I suppose Charles will have to take a number of books with him to Mr Headlam’s? – How is this managed? do you ask Mr Headlam what he will require? – and I suppose you will think of telling Charles not to bring a heavy box of books round by Grasmere, but send it direct by luggage train to Whorlton. – I hope you received my letter, in which I told you of Mr Headlam’s calling here –
