Grasmere Tuesday Sept 14
My dear Henry
You will have been quite unprepared for the event at Brickworth which we read in the Times this morning – It is long since we were separated from the joyous Uncle John of former days 1 – but those days live vividly in my remembrance, and excite feelings of kindly regret for his death. Have you heard anything from the Family?
What a disastrous incident in the first trip of the Great Eastern! 2 We have been reading the account with breathless interest – and how far more disastrous the accident might have proved to the lives of many on board! – if it had not been for many providential circumstances. – I have had an interview this morning with our House Agent Mr Green, to enquire whether Rothay Bank has been let immediately after the expiration of our term on the 21st because I think it will suit us better to set out on our journey about a week later. Matilda is so very anxious that Mlle Amélina & Rosamond should pay Speddock a little visit before we go South, that they have promised to do so if possible – And I think it would have been accomplished ere now, if the weather of the last fortnight had been more favorable – and if Mlle A has been as well as usual. But for the reasons I mentioned in my least letter I think it very desirable that we should not be tied down to any particular day for leaving Grasmere – and I am sure you will not mind our being at home a week or ten days later than the original time – Mr Green tells me that he has received no intimation of this house being let by M Marshall & that he believes we shall not be disturbed – but he will write & ascertain – We should all be sorry to disappointed dear Matilda now she has quite set her heart upon shewing Spaddock to her Sister & to Mlle A. and they are equally anxious to go. This is coming back as you see to the first idea – & I remember saying then that it was scarcely possible to know what our mutual feeling might be about it when the time came – So you will not much wonder at this change – Yr affecte
Constance
