My Dear Constance
I hope the letter arrived which I wrote to Ela from Calais. I left Calais at 2 P.M. and slept at Amiens – The next morning early I went to see the quarries of St Acheul about a mile from Amiens where the Stone hatchets are found which have given rise to so much Scientific speculation – I bought four of these hatchets from the workmen – There was an ancient Roman cemetery on the spot and many stone coffins are found like those at Lacock – The workmen had just found one about 6 feet from the surface, it looked like a rock jutting out from the perpendicular face of the quarry. But the hatchets are found much lower down along with teeth of elephants &c &c. I do not mean to stay in Paris longer than I can help. Yesterday was terrifically hot today is cloudy & rainy.
Your affly
Henry
