My Dear Constance

I arrived here Wedny and wrote to you the next day, which I hope you received – I have recd 2 letters from you, inclosing a letter wch came for me. I hope to continue my journey on Tuesday my next address will be Poste Restante Bayonne (Basses Pyrenees) I should not have thought there could have been so great a difference between the Climate of England & France as there was last Wedny the 27th June – You say that at Lacock you had shocking dark weather quite unnatural – But in France the sun was unclouded the whole day, and at Paris in the afternoon the heat and glare was something tremendous, walking along the quais by the river side – At sunset it became very pleasant in the jardin des Tuileries where the parterres are very gay with flowers. But I prefer the jardin du Luxembourg where there is a sweet smell of orangeflowers, the orange trees being in large tubs at regular intervals. I am glad to hear Charles is on a comfortable visit at Mirehouse and that you will soon see him.

I enclose you the portrait of my friend the Abbé Moigno as it appears on his visiting card, which please to keep safe for me. These visiting cards are now all the rage at Paris, they cost only from sixpence to ninepence each so they are becoming quite à la mode. I hear nothing from Uncle Wm so I am afraid he has given up his tour. Have you seen the comet? I am told it has been finely seen at Paris, but I looked out & could see nothing – It is in the North.

Your affte

Henry
