London Wedny 12 Septr
My Dear Constance
The weather has been most beautiful ever since I left you – harvest going on everywhere. Mr Matheson was gone up Sea fell pikes by which I lost a day. On Tuesday I walked over from Grasmere to the Windermere station which is eight miles or rather better – I called on Mr Matheson by the way. At Windermere it was the fete day of the school children and I fell in with a grand procession of flags. Browns hotel at Grasmere is not a comfortable one. I recommend you to take advantage of the beautiful weather to visit Buttermere Think how beautifully blue it would look with such a cloudless sky. I noticed in Keswick a bootmaker with a capital name, Make ‘em soon do you deal with him? I came from Lancaster today (Kings Arms very old fashioned but comfortable enough) I travelled all the way without a companion in the carriage All the world’s gone to Doncaster I suppose & nobody travelling to London – I dare say Your friend Mr Merry will win the St Leger
Your affte Henry
