TALBOT8246

Oakfield November 10th

My dear Henry

Mrs John Spedding’s Bankers are Glyn & Co 67 Lombard Street – I am going to settle today the small sum which is owing for Charles’s Pony being out at Grass seven weeks in the summer. – I sent Mr J. Spedding a note about it yesterday, as they are leaving Greta Bank on Tuesday next – and such a trifle should be paid at once – I have been advising Charles to sell the Pony if we can hear of a Purchaser among our friends here who would be kind to the animal – Charles agrees with me that he could scarcely make any use of him at Edinburgh – And as he is not suitable for Cambridge, he would really be doing no work at all for months to come – and as our frequent journeys – and moving to places where there is neither a Stable, nor Stable servant to look after him, would entail no end of expense, it will be really the wisest thing to dispose of him. Mrs Farell called at Oakfield yesterday, & when I spoke of the Pony she said how much she shd like to have him, for she had heard him so much praised at Whorlton. The only difficulty is how to get rid of her present one – which doesn’t suit her very well. – She says if she could sell her own, she would gladly buy Charles’s at once.

Have you heard from Charles? – I will copy the few words which he says to me, (after answering the Pony question) – "I am in moderate health, certainly not thinner or weaker than I was, but not able to read much. I had engaged a Tutor on the advice of Messr Mathison & Headlam, but have been obliged to leave off reading more than the regular lectures." –

This is very meagre information, and not very satisfactory. – Observe too that this is only the second time he has written – Nothing from Mr. Headlam at present – but I rely on his promise after sufficient time has elapsed.

G. Wilkins started yesterday at 3 o’clock by the Coach. He could not reach Kelso till today. and will write to his Father on Sunday: but of course he will not be able to post the letter till Monday. So his Father must not expect to hear before Wednesday –

The remittance of £300 – which you announced to me, was duly received at the Keswick Bank to my credit. and Mr. Crosthwaite informed me of it yesterday. – Rosamond’s face has nearly lost its stiffness.

Your affectionate
Constance
