My dear Henry
Did Mr Mathison promise to write to you about Charles? If so I think there has been sufficient time allowed for him to form an opinion & send you a report. – I share your anxiety and earnest wish that he should do well at Cambridge – but you are aware of the peculiar circumstances that make this doubtful. – and for which Charles himself is not wholly responsible. Hypochondriacs are not in a healthy state of mind – though the affection may very in degree – and I am willing to hope for the best in his case. Still I will not conceal from you that my conversation with Mr Headlam on this painful subject, left me full of apprehension. – I think it is quite as well that he did not join the Rifle Corps. – he may feel more equal to this at a future time. It would be a relief both to you and to me if he were to write more frequently, but there is no possibility of inducing him to do so, if he has not a mind to it –
I think your plan of delaying to join us next, till after we are settled at Edinburgh, is the best and most convenient for all – because we shall move and get settled more easily, the fewer we are in number. and there will be some moving of furniture &c &c after entering upon our house in Moray Place – I will answer your question about money a little later – for there has been rather an accumulation of accounts in consequence of Goodwin’s long absence. –
I am to have a talk with our friend Mr. Carlisle Wake about the Pony, and will let you know what is proposed –
About the date of our starting for Edinburgh, there will be 2 days allowed for sending our Servants on to clear & warm the house – They will enter on the 4th – and we on the 6th, sleeping at Carlisle on the 5th.
But our arrangements are have scarcely assumed a positive shape thus early. I have a letter from dear Matilda from Dabton. where they went on Monday – and today they were to reach Edinburgh – having sent their Servants forward on Monday –
dear Henry I am you affectionate
Constance.
Mlle A had a letter from Caroline a few days ago, answering hers of a month back! Ld Mt E. is still in London and talking of passing the winter there – with all of them. –
Rosamond is quite well – and thanks you for your letter. Mlle A has had a severe cold, but is beginning to mend. –
