In consequence of the letter which I received from you, I beg to inform you that it is my wish to belong to the Society2 – and I am desired by Lord Sandon3 who was out of England when the letters were circulated, to express the same wish4.

That is the Athenaeum.
Dudley Ryder, Viscount Sandon (1798–1882, ODNB). Son of Earl of Harrowby and Politician.
Both Harrowby and Sandon are listed as original members of the Athenaeum in Waugh [1894], 66 and 129 respectively.
