I beg you will do me the favour to express to the Society of Arts for Scotland my sense of the honor that has been done me by my admission upon the list of their Honorary Members2 and to express at the same time my earnest desire that my future progress in science either speculative or useful may be such as never to give occasion to the wish that my name should be removed[.]
