In mezzo alle mie strane malinconie, e sempre fisso di formarmi una famiglia onde passar la vita meno male, mi era balenato alla mente il pensiero di pregarvi di scegliermi fra le damigelle inglesi di vostra conoscenza qualcheduna che voglia essermi moglie. Per ora non parliamone più; ma se questo desiderio si risveglierà nell’animo mio, credete che non muterò di scelta².

TRANSLATION

In the midst of my strange melancholies, there is always the idea that I should form a family in which to pass life less painfully, a thought struck me that I should ask you to choose from amongst the young ladies of your acquaintance one who would want to be my wife. For now let us not speak of it any more; but if this wish stirs again in my soul, believe me that I will not change the choice³.
