My dear Sir
I cannot resist the opportunity of bringing to your mind one who though he has only once seen you1 has long known you by that which makes the highest tie amongst men of science the fruits of the mind; and though for myself I may have little plea on that score yet your kindness which I have already experienced will balance that deficiency. It gives me great pleasure to think that you are one of our 28 honorary members2[.] I only wish that I could come to Italy & say so in person: but in this as in many other things I must curb my desires. Believe me to be with the greatest respect
