Quando verrete a trovarci in Italia? Dovreste almeno dirmi se pensate di fare una qualche gita sul continente. Se sapeste come la vita è trista qui! Ringrazio ad ogni momento la Provvidenza d’avermi dato l’amore della scienza.

Se potessi credere che non v’incommodasse troppo il ricevere di quando in quando una mia lettera e il risponderle, ne sarei ben contento, giacchè non è unicamente e principalmente il leggere i vostri pensieri scientifici che mi reca un così vivo piacere, ma anche il sentirvi parlare con codesta semplicità, propria di una mente, la quale invece d’essere inorgoglita e offuscata dai suoi successi, trova delle ragioni sempre più forti per umiliarsi e ringraziare la Provvidenza.

When will you come to visit us in Italy? You should at least tell me if you are thinking of doing any trips to the continent. If you knew how sad life was here! I thank Providence at every moment for having given me a love of science.

If I could believe that it would not inconvenience you too much to receive from time to time a letter of mine and to respond to it, I would be very happy, although it is not only and principally reading of your scientific thoughts that gives me such a lively pleasure but also hearing you speak with that simplicity which belongs to a mind that instead of being full of pride and obscured by its successes, finds always stronger reasons to humble itself and to thank Providence.
