Faraday to Jacob Herbert   5 May 1853

5 May 1853 | Royal Institution

My dear Sir

I have seen and heard Mr Wells Fog signal1 and cannot help thinking that its deserves a fair trial:- as to distant effect over the water. The sound is very distinct & I think in character more available than that of a bell or a gong. It will require greater power than either of these but still the power of a man appears to be sufficient - even in the present comparitively [sic] rough state of the apparatus2[.]

I am My dear Sir | Yours Very faithfully | M Faraday

Jacob Herbert Esqr | &c &c &c
