Faraday to Frederick Gye   22 May 1854

Royal Institution | 22 May 1854

My dear Sir

If there be an opera on Thursday night1 and if perfectly convenient to yourself can you treat me with a feast of sweet sounds? I have such confidence in you as to trust fully that you will say no if my desire is at all out of place2.

Every Truly Yours | M. Faraday

Fredk Gye Esq | &c &c &c

That is 25 May 1854.
Faraday would have heard part of “Fidelio” by the German born composer Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827, GDMM) who worked mainly in Vienna and “The Barber of Savile” by the Italian composer Gioacchino Antonio Rossini (1792-1868, GDMM). See Times, 25 May 1854, p.8, col. a.
