Faraday to Thomas Phillipps   29 May 1855

My dear Sir Thomas,

There is perhaps no science that requires more closely following than Chemistry and you would have to read & think a good deal before you could possibly be on a level with the Chemistry of Aluminium1. However I can explain the terms you refer to. Oxymuriatic acid as it used to be called is now known to be an elementary body - is called chlorine & its compounds with metals are in French called Chlorures. “Chlorhydrique” is a compound of Chlorine & hydrogen the old Muriatic acid will pass by that name. “Chalumcan” is the blowpipe. I think you have mastered the subject pretty well if these are all your difficulties[.]
