Faraday to Jacob Herbert   16 June 1855

Royal Institution | 16 June 1855

My dear Sir

The waters as they came to me in the bottles were not bad1. That labled Assistant light keeper was very good being soft, without colour, or taste; free from organic matter, and also from lead. It contains only small quantities of sulphate of lime & chloride of Sodium substances which might very properly be present. The water labled Principal light keeper was also soft & good in respect of taste, smell, & saline matters, but there was a little organic matter (I do not know what its source may be) which gave it a little colour and there was also a small trace of lead; very small but still distinct. There was no sediment of lead in either of the bottles[.]

Ever My dear Sir | Very truly Yours | M. Faraday

Jacob Herbert Esqr. | &c &c &c
