Monsieur & très cher ami,

J’apprends par mon ami Prevost¹ que vous êtes encore à Londres & que vous ne quittez cette ville que lundi prochain. Monsieur Tyndall m’avait induit en erreur en me disant, il y a déjà 15 jours, que vous aviez déjà quitté Londres. Ce motif joint à d’autres avait fait que j’avais prolongé sans regret mon Séjour à Paris. Maintenant l’arrivée de mon frère² & de deux de mes enfants m’oblige de retarder mon départ jusqu’à lundi prochain 30 juillet. J’arriverai donc à Londres seulement ce jour là ou le lendemain matin mardi 31, désirant passer le dimanche tranquille & ne pas être en voyage ce jour là.

Maintenant je viens vous demander si je ne pourrai pas aller un matin vous faire une visite à la campagne & si vous ne revenez point quelquefois à Londres de la campagne où vous serez.- Vous comprenez combien je tiens à vous serrer la main & à m’entretenir quelques instants avec vous.- Veuillez donc avoir la bonté de m’écrire deux mots chez MM. Morris Prevost & c ³ pour me donner vos instructions.

Je compte rester à Londres 10 à 15 jours pour corriger les épreuves qui m’attendent⁴, puis j’irai faire un tour en Ecosse avec ma femme & l’une de mes filles que j’emmène avec moi. Je repasserai donc de nouveau à Londres vers la fin d’Aout. J’espère donc bien avoir le plaisir de vous voir, d’autant plus que, comme vous le savez, je n’ai pas à Londres un plus excellent ami que vous.

Sir and very dear friend,

I learn from my friend Prevost⁵ that you are still in London and that you are not leaving that city until next Monday. Mr Tyndall had misled me by saying, two weeks ago, that you had already left London. This reason linked to others made me prolong my stay in Paris with no regrets. Now the arrival of my brother⁶ and two of my children obliges me to delay my departure until next Monday, 30 July. I shall arrive in London, therefore, only that day or the following morning, Tuesday 31, desiring to spend Sunday quietly and not be travelling that day.

Now I write to ask you if I could visit you one morning in the country and if you perhaps sometimes come back to London from the country where you will be staying. - You know how much I would like to shake hands with you and to spend some time with you. - Please therefore have the kindness to write a couple of words to me at Messrs. Morris Prevost & co ⁷ to give me your instructions.

I count on being in London 10 to 15 days to correct the proofs that are awaiting me⁸ then I am going on a tour of Scotland with my wife and one of my daughters who will be travelling with me. I shall pass through London again towards the end of August. I therefore hope to have the pleasure of seeing you, all the more because, as you know, I have in London no more excellent friend than you.
