Faraday to James Timmins Chance   21 November 1860

[Royal Institution embossed letterhead] | 21 Novr. 1860

My dear Sir

I have your notes & thank you heartily for them1[.]

I have sent your Whitby report with mine to the Trinity House2 - Send the bill of the alterations to the Trinity House (Not being experimental)[.]

Your report of your results makes me fear that you find the same wavering in conclusions that I found in my mode of considering the matter here - for you make a sudden jump from belt No. 1 to belts Nos. 2.3.4.5. &c. and get results the opposite to Stevensons[.]

I should like when I come to see the effect of each rib and the effect of the whole panel;- and if possible the latter compared with an ordinary panel. I suppose the effect of each rib & of all the ribs together could be had in the day time in your dark gallery - by the use of screening for the ribs of the panel and a whitened surface to the door end of the gallery - and then I suppose that the corrected panel & an ordinary panel could be compared across the yard at night time upon a whitened screen or wall in the distance. Is this so.

Now there is a good deal of observation in all this - and a good deal of preparatory work. Shall I come down next Monday3 at the usual time? & then if need be I could stop & work on the Tuesday or even longer. It is very desirable to have our minds settled[.]

I should like to compare the same panel & ribs using a high & a low flame - this can be done easily if we have a ready means of shading the panel by two pieces of canvas so as to shew us any one rib by itself when wanted.

If you approve of Monday please let me know as soon as you can[.]

Ever Truly Yours | M. Faraday
