Faraday to Edward Kater1   28 February 1861

[Royal Institution embossed letterhead] | 28 Feby 1861

My dear Sir

I have been very much interested by looking over the Solander you sent to me containing such very pleasant remembrances of Dr Wollaston2[.] I had some of his wires but nothing so fine as some that are here3. If you think of presenting the box with its contents to me I shall take very great care of it using it to illustrate Dr Wollastons character whenever the occasion rises and the best history I can attach to it will be your letter[.] Do not let me however mistake your intention for I know that if I return it to you you would always give me access to it[.]

Ever My dear Sir | Your faithful Servant | M. Faraday

Edwd Kater Esq | &c &c &c

Edward Kater (1816–1866, B2). Gentleman and landowner; member of the Royal Institution. Macmillan (1966), 22.
William Hyde Wollaston (1766–1828, ODNB). Man of science. Worked on physiology, chemistry and physics. Secretary of the Royal Society, 1804–16, President 1820.
These were samples of very fine platinum wires made by Wollaston. See Michael Faraday, ‘On Platinum’, Friday Evening Discourse of 22 February 1861, Chem.News, 2 March 1861, 3: 136-41, p.140 and Coatsworth et al. (1981), 101.
