Robert Gordon to Faraday   15 May 1861

17 Pall Mall | 15th May

My Dear Sir

You will see by a note1, which I have no doubt you have received from Mr Berthon, that a Committee has been appointed to examine all our Dioptric Light Establishments with the view of remedying any inaccuracies of arrangement that may be found to exist2 - As this appears to me to be chiefly mechanical work I have proposed that the execution shall be entrusted to Mr Chance, but at the same time it will be very useful if you can lay down a few simple rules or instructions for their guidance, & I think this is as much as we ought to ask you to do, notwithstanding “we are fortunately prevented from ever finally committing ourselves to the adoption of any impracticable scheme through your services”

I have not forgotten another subject connected with those valuable services, but I could not induce my colleagues to admit that the right moment had exactly arrived, however you may rest assured that they are not forgotten by

Your’s very truly | Rob Gordon
