John Frederick William Herschel to Faraday   24 July 1861

Collingwood | July 24 / 61

My dear Faraday

I asked you some considerable time ago if you had a spare copy of your 4th. Series of Electrical Researches1 - being anxious to get them all bound up but time being wanting you replied that you had not one - so I deferred the binding till I had time to copy that from the Phil Trans.-

My set being now as I thought completed by that copy I have first been arranging them for binding when behold another difficulty.-

I have got both the 29th. and 30th. Series2 - but the 29th ends with no 3242 and the 30th. begins with no 3363 - There seems therefore to be a gap of 121 Articles between them but on looking over the Vols of the Phil Trans for 1852 ----- 1856 I can find nothing of yours but those papers which you so kindly sent me - and the 29th Series contains Sections 35, 36, 37 while the 30th begins with Section 38[.]

May I request you to tell me whether this is an accidental mistake of the Printer - or if there exist in some other record than the Phil Trans, the intermediate Articles 3243 – 33613 & in that case if you have spare copies of them would you bestow one on

Yours very truly | J.F.W. Herschel
