James Timmins Chance to Faraday   10 August 1861

Birmingham Augt. 10: 1861

My dear Sir,

I enclose a mem[orand]um of what has been done at North Foreland1.

If you could conveniently send your own report2, (either by forwarding mine, or in any other way which seems proper to you) to the Trinity House, for their Tuesday’s Board, it would, I know, gratify the Elder Brethren.

I am now proceeding with the S. Foreland. I purpose going there myself next Tuesday3.

Yours very truly | James T. Chance

Profr. Faraday. | &c &c

P.S. You will observe that I mention a memorandum of the various adjustments having been recorded in the Order Book of the N. Foreland Light.

Any record of dip &c, on the Apparatus itself should (I think) be on a Brass Plate.

If you think it necessary to inscribe on the Apparatus any particulars, in addition to the record in the Order Book, I will have brass plates prepared, which can be fixed on the altered apparatuses at the first opportunity. If anything is inscribed on the apparatus itself, it should be so done as not to be liable to be effaced, & should also be something better than the ordinary workmen’s scratches.

J.T.C.

I purpose calling at the Trinity House at ½ past 2 next Tuesday aftn. in passing through London: but do not inconvenience yourself, to be there, unless you have anything to settle about the matters in hand[.]

A copy of the memorandum, dated 10 August 1861, is in LMA CLC/526/MS 30108/A1, pp.377-9.
That is 13 August 1861.
