James Timmins Chance to Faraday   19 August 1861

Birmingham 19 Agt. 1861

My dear Sir,

I enclose a mem[orandu]m of the work done at the South Foreland1.

The axis of the apparatus is (as perhaps you are aware) not coincident, by some ⅞ths of an inch, with the axis of the Lantern.

But I had no instructions to alter this defect - and the error did not interfere in any way with my effecting the optical adjustments which were ordered to be made.

I have not, therefore, attempted to rectify this mistake.

None of the glass has been changed - it is all very bad in quality, & a great many prisms were badly broken - but it was considered that it would be better to have a new apparatus than to replace the bad, & broken, glass.

The curvatures of the prisms were far superior to those at the North Foreland Light.

The brass plates shall be attached at the first opportunity.

Yours very truly | James T. Chance.

Profr. Faraday &c &c
