My dear Sir

We are very sorry to lose you & I especially so1. I do not know why I say that however for all I have talked with wished to hear you[.]

I am sorry not to have sooner acknowledged your note. But having taken [it] to Dr Bence Jones & left it with him - it was absent from its place on my table - and my failure in memory did the rest[.]
