Faraday to Ernst Becker   9 July 1862

[Royal Institution embossed letterhead] | 9 July 1862

My dear Becker

We are about to reprint the list of our Members;- and that recalls our grief at the very first page, for the sad loss to us and to science of our Vice Patron & friend His Royal Highness the late Prince Consort. The occasion raises in the minds of some of us, whom you know well, the question, whether it is possible that His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales would accept that position, next after Her Majesty, who is our Patron. I have thought it possible that you might be able to ascertain whether such a thought would be agreeable; for we are afraid of hurting the feelings of Her Majesty, or the Prince, if we move in any way without such a judgment & encouragement as that you could give us in the matter.

Ever Yours Affectionately | M. Faraday

Dr Becker | &c &c &c
