Jane Barnard to Miss Crum   9 October 1863

Hampton Court Green | S.W. | 9 Oct 1863

My dear Miss Crum

On Wednesday1 I received your pleasant letter & your photograph, for which I thank you very much. I must confess that I shall be pleased to change it for a better one when you have one, for though it is very much like you, yet I think it is too soft & does not do you justice. You see I am very bold but hope you will pardon me. My Uncle is quite pleased to have it & says it brings you most pleasantly to his remembrance[.] As to mine, I feel my vanity much flattered by it, which is however rather brought down by some people who remark, that “it is a very nice picture but it is not you”.

We are still here at our country house & I suppose shall remain here the rest of the month but the weather is not delightful & the ground is very damp & I shall be very glad to get back to Albemarle St. I am afraid my visit to Scotland rather spoilt me for this place. I am in my Uncles study & I have just turned to him to know if he has any message. He says he is much pleased with the portrait & whatever improvement you make upon it he shall take the liberty of keeping this one for himself, the only deficiency is that it does not sing.

With kind remembrances to all your circle

I am | dear Miss Crum | Yours most sincerely | Jane Barnard

That is 7 October 1863.
