Faraday to William Pigott   19 November 1863

[Royal Institution embossed letterhead] | 19 Novr. 1863

Sir

I had the honor of accompanying yourself & the Committee of the Elder Brethren to Sea Last Tuesday1 for the purpose of observing & comparing the effects of Dabolls fog horn (as a signal) with the power of Holmes Steam trumpet and that of a bell;- and having now had the advantage of reading the report of that Committee2, it will be enough for me to say, that I agree with it entirely up to 1 o’clk. By that time I was rendered unable through seasickness to make any further useful observation; and so, have no right even to give a formal assent. Long before that time however the superiority of the Daboll horn was very manifest - and the inferiority of the Holmes steam trumpet even to the Bell at the Dungeness light house3[.]

I have the honor to be | Sir | Your very faithful Servant | M. Faraday

The | Deputy Master | Trinity House | &c &c &c

That is 17 November 1863.
