Faraday to Peter Henry Berthon   2 January 1864

Royal Institution | 2 Jany. 1864.

Sir

In reference to Mr. Dickson’s letter1 I can only say that it conveys no information about the means he proposes to employ; and in that, & other, respects creates no confidence. This invention (he says) is patented2;- the specification therefore ought to convey all the information needful to understand the matter. He ought therefore to send you a copy of the specification;- which, when I see it, will enable me to give you a longer & stronger opinion3[.]

I am Sir | Your Very faithful Servant | M. Faraday

P.H. Berthon Esqr | &c &c &c

James Dickson, Patent 340, 10 February 1862, ‘Improvements in voltaic apparatus and in the production of voltaic electricity’.
This letter was read to Trinity House Court, 5 January 1864, LMA CLC/526/MS 30004/29, pp.93-4 who followed Faraday’s advice.
