Turin, 5 January, 1864.

Mon cher Ami,

J’ai appris que vous avez déjà eu la bonté de remettre à mon ami Mr. Le Comte Pasolini1 le cahier des mémoires de Taylor dont je vous avais prié. J’espère aussi que vous aurez déjà su par Mr. Pasolini qui, ayant déjà recu d’autre parr ce même volume, je n’étais plus forcé de profiter de votre bonté. Mr Pasolini est encore à Londres et j’espère qu’il vous aura déjà rendu le livre. Maintenant j’ai un autre grace à vous demander. Je n’ai pas l’honneur de connaitre l’Amiral Fitzroy, et je ne saurais même comment m’adresser à lui; on vient de former ici une commission chargée d’étudier le sujet des présages météorologiques.

L’Amiral Fitzroy est certainement l’autorité la plus compétente pour donner un conseil. Si vous aviez la bonté de lui remettre la page2 ci-jointe avec deux ou trois questions et de m’envoyer les responses que j’espère bien il voudra faire, je vous en serai très reconnaissant.

Turin, 5 January 1864

My dear friend,

I have learnt that you have already had the goodness to give to my friend the Count Pasolini3 Taylor’s Memoir’s which I asked you to obtain. I hope also that you will have already been informed by Mr. Pasolini who, having already received the same volume from elsewhere, I was no longer forced to profit from your kindness. Mr Pasolini is still in London and I hope that he will have already returned the book to you. Now I have another favour to ask of you. I do not have the honour of knowing Admiral Fitzroy, and I would not even know how to address myself to him; we have just formed here a commission charged with studying the subject of meteorological predictions.

Admiral Fitzroy is certainly the most competent authority to give advice. If you had the kindness to forward to him the enclosed page4 with two or three questions and to send me the responses, which I really hope he will want to give, I will be very grateful to you.
