Faraday to James Timmins Chance   20 January 1864

[Royal Institution embossed letterhead] | 20 January / 64

My dear Mr. Chance

Though business has not brought me your way I cannot please my own mind by letting the thoughts of you drop within me and if I had not been lowered in health & depressed in spirits for some weeks past should have written to you some time ago. I do not as yet feel much lifted up and fear I shall wish you a happy new year in a very lugubrious strain but believe me it is with great heartiness. I hope Mrs. Chance & the children have so far got well through this very cold winter1. It has suited us in London though it has put all the large prophets much out in their calculations2[.]

I must lie down[.]

Adieu My dear friend | Ever Yours Truly | M. Faraday

Jas. Chance Esqr | &c &c &c
