Trinity House. London. E.C. | 4th March.1864.
Sir,
I am directed by the Elder Brethren to transmit to you for your observations a suggestion which has been submitted to them by Mr. Jas. N. Douglass, their practical Engineer, for the Construction of a 1st Class Lantern having Vertical Standards of rolled Steel of less thickness than the present Gun-Metal Diagonal Standards.
The Elder Brethren would be glad to know whether, in your opinion, with standards constructed as above suggested, the Armature of the Lens might not be placed so as to come intermediately between them, with greater practical benefit than if placed optically coincident with them as at present.-
I am, Sir, | Your most humble Servant, | P.H. Berthon
To be returned P.S. Enclosed are two reports from Mr. Douglass dated 15th Ult. and 2nd Inst. together with a plan and two diagrams.-
