Faraday to William Sharpey1   16 April 1864

[Royal Institution embossed letterhead] | 16 April 1864.

My dear Sharpey

Adml. Fitzroy wished me to send on the accompanying papers to you after looking at them. I am much surprized to see it said in them that I with Daniell had told Matteucci he was to be made F.M.2 at the first vacancy[.] I could not have said so, and as I believe never did[.] It is the first I have heard of such a promise please contradict it when you have occasion[.] I shall write to Matteucci at once as respects myself[.]

Ever Yours | M. Faraday

William Sharpey (1802–1880, ODNB). Secretary of the Royal Society, 1853–1872.
Foreign Member of the Royal Society to which Matteucci was never elected, though it was discussed at RS CM, 17 March 1864, 3: 188.
