Peter Henry Berthon to Faraday   6 October 1864

Trinity House, London | 6th October 1864

Dear Sir,

Representations having been made to the Board that the quality of the Drinking Water at the Light Establishment at Orfordness [No I]1, and at the Fog Gun Station on Lundy Island [No II], is bad; that, at the former, one of the Keepers has suffered for a length of time from violent attacks of Colick produced by the Water, and that, at the latter, it’s use by the Gunners has been followed by purging, I am directed by the Elder Brethren to request that you will analyze the Water (samples of which are herewith sent) and favor me, for their information, with a Report of the results; stating particularly whether, in your judgment, it is calculated to produce the effects above mentioned[.]

I am | Dear Sir | Yours faithfully | P.H. Berthon

M. Faraday Esqre. L.L.D.

Both this and the next interpolation are in Faraday’s hand.
