Faraday to Henry Bence Jones   20 December 1864

Clyde House | Brighton | 20 Decr. 1864

Dear friend

I ought to report myself to you for now that this place has done what it can do we are preparing to return home and to what duty lies before us, though that is but small. We think we shall return on Thursday1 by the 11 fast train if all favour us. I hope the trial of the gas tonight 2 will be successful & the slate also and that my absence has not been hurtful to the R.I. and yet when I feel how vain my pretence of help is to the body which I love so well I really laugh at myself; but bear with me for a few days and all will pass bye.

I think however that the Place here has done its expected duty with us & that our coming here has not been in vain. My wife desires to be kindly remembered to you & Lady Millicent & we trust to hear that the latter has not lost by her return to London. Jeannie who thinks deeply about her Uncle ought not to be left out of remembrance by him at all events & by his friends[.]

Ever affectionately Yours | M. Faraday

Dr. Bence Jones | &c &c &c

That is 22 December 1864.
See RI MM, 4 November 1864, 12: 78 for the testing of gas supply to the Royal Institution.
