Faraday to Frederick Gye   11 May 1865

Hampton Court | Green | Thursday 11 May 1865

My dear Mr. Gye

I received & profited by your favour at the Opera House and should have called there to thank you personally, but have been a little [word illegible] since by a slight attack of paralysis or what seems to me to be so, which has taken away a part of my power of action & rendered me incapable quite of free action. But we were at the Theatre in the Evening and I wished to thank Mrs. Gye1 for her intended kindness but found on enquiry that she was not there[.] Will you do me this favour? I cannot say how much I feel the kindness of you both. This attack is on my right side both in the arm & in the leg. You will see how the members refuse their obedience to the will & I fear that the uncertainty they cause in my actions will interfere with your great kindness but I will try what power they have left me that way.- A kind able and very affectionate niece is most willing in her devotion to me. I am sure I do not know what I should do without her. But I am in no pain only weak & weary & continually failing in my purpose[.] I shall look in upon you some day soon & hope soon to recover much but I was ashamed to serve my purpose with you & do no more[.]

Believe me to be Very Affectionately | Your faithful Servant | M. Faraday

Elizabeth Allen Gye, née Hughes (d.1874, age 64, GRO). Wife of Frederick Gye.
